Students are expected to have a solid foundation in grammar and be able to write well- organized paragraphs and papers *or* be concurrently pursuing a course of study such as Foundations of Grammar and Writing. Writing assignments in the context of literature include: Approach Paper, Author Profile, Historical Approach Paper, and Literature Summary. In order to provide material for a full English credit, readings and assignments from the book The Lively Art of Writing will be included. The student study guide to accompany this book will be provided by the tutor.

An honors option is included in the text, and schedules an additional novel for each unit; bringing the total number of novels read to fourteen. Students who have previously studied a particular novel may repeat the novel for deeper understanding or substitute the honors novel.
